Are Koi Ponds High Maintenance?

Koi are some of the larger fish you can keep in a pond and therefore will eat more and excrete more waste than small pond fish. For this reason a good filtration system is essential for keeping Koi. Ecosystem Koi Ponds have the lowest maintenance requirements due to the natural filtration methods used. Check out our Ecosystem Ponds to see how these work. Traditional Koi Pools usually involve a large deep pond with a pump at the bottom and an external filter. This type of filtration requires more attention and regular cleaning than an ecosystem pond and depending on the fish load will need to be deep cleaned every few months or minimum once per year.

How To Look After A Pond

Looking after your pond is the same as looking after your garden. Doing a little bit of maintenance regularly is much easier than leaving it all until the end of the year.

Every pond is different and will require a unique maintenance schedule based on the fish, plants and filtration in your pond.

How to perform a pond deep clean?

Set up a temporary storage pond ready to house the fish, plants and wildlife.
1
Begin emptying the water from the pond into the storage pond. We recommend trying to store the cleaner water only. Make sure you have enough for the fish to be safely back in and then dispose of the dirtier or murkier water. Note: Please only use specialist equipment for draining the pond water. Using a sump pump may suck in the wildlife and fish.
2
Once the water level has dropped use a net to transfer the fish from the pond to the storage pond. Also remove any plants and trim, re-pot/divide as required.
3
Scoop any sludge out the bottom of the pond and leave this on the side or in borders close to the pond to allow wildlife to escape and return to the pond.
4
Clean the pond lining carefully using a light jet wash and pond vacuum to remove the dirty water.
5
Open the pump casing and deep clean the pump, impeller and casing.
6
Deep clean the filtration system. Make sure to clean the biological media in pond water to preserve the bacteria. We like to add additional kickstarter bacteria after the clean to help the filter bacteria quickly reestablish.
7
Return the plants to the pond and begin topping up the pond with water. Start with returning the stored water and then reintroduce the fish. Top up the remainder with tap water and make sure to use water conditioner to remove the chlorine from the water.

When to perform a pond deep clean?

The best time to clean your pond is in Spring once the water has warmed up above 10 degrees and the fish are active again. This allows you to safely clean the pond ready for the full season. We do not recommend cleaning a fish pond or disturbing fish when the water is below 10 degrees and they are in their dormant winter stage as they can become stressed and ill.
